AMBASSADOR THOMPSON TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19.

Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations Ambassador Elizabeth Thompson is in the island and has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

In a release from the Prime Minister's Office through the Government Information Service, it was noted the Ambassador has no symptoms of the disease and is feeling perfectly well.

Ambassador Thompson traveled to Barbados yesterday afternoon on a private jet from New York, the epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States.

She was tested at Paragon immediately after her arrival, and her positive result was confirmed this morning.

There was one other passenger on the plane, who has tested negative.

The release went on to note that Ms. Thompson came to Barbados to be at the bedside of her 95 year old mother, who became gravely ill with a non-COVID related heart condition on the weekend. Given the gravity of her mother’s condition, she was allowed to go to her mother’s bedside.

Since going to her mother’s residence, the release states the Ambassador has had no contact with the members of that household other than her mother, and that she was wearing a mask from the moment she got off the plane and has been practising physical distancing.

She will go into isolation at Harrison’s Point from today.

Despite not having contact with members of the household, the Ministry of Health is taking the usual precaution of testing family members, and will continue to deal with this situation as it has with all other cases in Barbados.
